Gen (玄) means both BLACK and EXPERT in Japanese.

The distinctive iron black and banded and mottled Damascus pattern of these knives reflect the tradition of Japanese beauty and harmony.  The traditional chestnut handles provide a natural grip for the hand, and the hammer on the knife stops food from sticking to the blade.

Producing a stable Kuro-uchi finish (meaning no coats or dyes) on stainless steel was challenging, but the designers and artisans tackled it head-on with the goal of producing a true Kuro-uchi blade that combines high performance with classic beauty and ease of care. After 29 months of research and development, they finally developed the technique that creates this traditional ancient finish on stainless steel.

The use of VG10 Stainless steel makes these knives super sharp, reliable, and easy to care for, while the composite pakkawood handles are not only elegant, rugged, and moisture resistant, but unbelievably light and comfortable to hold in your hand. The handles are created in a right-handed d-shape with a stainless insert at the top. This helps prevent water from getting into the handle without overlapping the ferrule and increases the handle stability.

The fit and finish on this series is excellent, and the Kurouchi hammered Damascus aesthetic is beautiful. The knives are relatively thin, and still retain both toughness and durability. They work well for home cooks and working professionals alike. The boxes are beautiful, and are made in the “Shihouchitsu” style, with elegant clasps that hold them closed. Make it stand out.

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

A special gift for someone special

In Japan it has long been believed that the gift of a knife is a good omen for a good beginning or a happy occasion. Blades have always been used to celebrate new beginnings because they are thought of as something that "cuts off evil" and "opens up the future”. Gen's knives are delivered in a beautiful "Shihochitsu" (four-way binding) style box, a type of Japanese book binding with a clasp to close the box. The clasp is said to have been invented by Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty in China for the purpose of storing, protecting, and preserving high quality books. These knives are a perfect gift for important occasions or someone special.
